Although pregnancy is probably one of the most beautiful times in a woman’s life, it is also associated with some restrictions in terms of your usual lifestyle. This not only includes abstinence from alcohol or nicotine, for example – cosmetic treatments should also only be carried out after extensive consultation and with great caution, and some should even be avoided altogether as an expectant mother.

And what about laser hair removal during pregnancy? Is that even possible? Could it harm the baby? What do I need to bear in mind? These questions understandably concern many mothers, which is why we would like to discuss the topic of hair removal during pregnancy in detail in this article.

Laser hair removal for pregnant women: restrictions

Of course, there are certain reservations about the procedure with a medical laser device during pregnancy. Doctors still disagree on whether laser hair removal is possible or advisable for pregnant women – however, most experts are against it, as the effects of this method during pregnancy have not yet been fully researched.

Before deciding to undergo laser hair removal during pregnancy, you should find out in detail about all possible contraindications. In fact, it is not recommended if you have never tried the procedure before pregnancy, as the reaction of your body in this case cannot be accurately predicted and may therefore pose a risk to your baby. After pregnancy, laser hair removal can of course be carried out without any problems.

Graphic overview: Contraindications for laser hair removal during pregnancy

If you would like to take advantage of laser hair removal therapy as an expectant mother, you should seek detailed advice from your gynecologist or family doctor and obtain professional permission to do so. In this case, there are a few rules and aspects to consider:

☑️ Not all areas of the body can be treated

Laser hair removal is safest on the arms, lower legs, feet and face. The remaining areas such as the intimate zone, stomach, chest or back should be avoided as a precaution.

☑️ Choose the right provider

You should also ensure that the laser device used by the practice providing the treatment is EU-approved and certified and therefore safe, and that the treatment is actually professional and pain-free, for example through reviews from previous customers. Pain can lead to a toning of the uterus and this in turn can lead to premature birth.

☑️ Be completely healthy

In order for a hair removal treatment to take place during pregnancy, you should be free of any skin problems or illnesses at the time of treatment to avoid any risks.

The right time for laser hair removal

Ideally, you should undergo laser hair removal during pregnancy in the second trimester – the first and last months of pregnancy are considered the most difficult, as there is both an increased sensation of pain for the mother and a possible risk for you and your child. It is difficult to say why this type of hair removal can pose a risk during pregnancy.

An expectant mother’s body is unpredictable and so far there is no consistent information on how it will react to the procedure. Furthermore, some experts speculate that the treatment could lose or change its effectiveness due to hormonal circumstanceshormones are indeed capable of influencing hair growth and pigmentation, but this is unpredictable.

📌 Our recommendation for pregnant women

Whether you ultimately opt for laser therapy is of course entirely up to you. In any case, it is advisable to seek advice from your gynecologist or family doctor, weigh up any risk factors and take into account the restrictions mentioned.

Regardless of how long you have been pregnant at the time of laser hair removal, the person treating you should always be informed so that the treatment is as pleasant, effective and low-risk as possible. A treatment plan tailored to your pregnancy should also be drawn up.
