Anabolism

Anabolism refers to the building up of complex molecules from simpler units in living organisms, a process that consumes energy. It is part of the metabolism which, together with catabolism, the breakdown of molecules, forms the dynamic network of biochemical reactions that take place in cells. While the anabolic metabolic process focuses on building proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids from smaller precursors such as amino acids, monosaccharides and fatty acids, catabolism is concerned with breaking them down to release energy.

In the context of hair, anabolism plays an important role as it is responsible for the formation of keratin, the protein that is mainly found in hair and nails. The anabolic process enables the synthesis of keratin from amino acids that are absorbed from food. A healthy, balanced diet rich in essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals supports the anabolic metabolism and thus promotes hair growth and hair health.

Hormonal factors can also influence anabolism. Hormones such as growth hormones, insulin and certain steroid hormones promote anabolic metabolic pathways, which in turn are essential for the growth and repair of tissues, including hair follicles. A healthy functioning anabolic metabolism is therefore crucial for maintaining strong, healthy hair and can help prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
