Bacteria

Bacteria are a large group of microscopically small, single-celled microbes that belong to the prokaryotes – organisms without a real cell nucleus. These microorganisms are found in almost all environments on earth, from the depths of the oceans to the most extreme habitats such as hot springs and even in and on the human body. Bacteria are characterized by a remarkable diversity in terms of their shapes, sizes and lifestyles, which makes them a fundamental part of the biosphere.

As microbes, bacteria fulfill essential ecological functions. Some are essential for biogeochemical cycles by converting elements such as nitrogen and carbon, which enables other organisms to survive. Other bacteria are important for human health by playing a role in the intestinal flora, aiding digestion and strengthening the immune system.

At the same time, certain bacteria can cause illness if they enter the body and colonize places where they do not belong. These pathogenic bacteria can cause infections ranging from mild skin irritations to life-threatening illnesses. Antibiotics are often used to combat bacterial infections, with increasing antibiotic resistance posing a global challenge.

In science and technology, bacteria are also used to produce products such as antibiotics, vitamins and biofuels, which underlines their versatility and importance. Despite their small size, bacteria as microbes are an indispensable part of life on earth and influence many aspects of human existence and health.
