Chronic diffuse effluvium

Chronic diffuse effluvium, also known as chronic diffuse hair loss, refers to a long-term and uniform thinning of hair over the entire scalp with no obvious focal areas or patterns. Unlike certain forms of hair loss that affect specific areas of the scalp, such as androgenetic alopecia, this hair loss is evenly distributed, resulting in an overall reduction in hair density.

This form of hair loss can be triggered by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, stress, or even underlying health problems such as thyroid disease. In contrast to acute diffuse effluvium, which occurs suddenly and can often be triggered by specific events or stressors, chronic diffuse effluvium develops over months or years.

Diagnosis of chronic diffuse effluvium often requires a thorough examination to rule out other causes of hair loss and identify possible underlying health issues. Treatment focuses on addressing the precipitating factors, such as correcting nutritional deficiencies through dietary changes or supplementation, adjusting medications or treating hormonal imbalances. In some cases, it may be helpful to offer psychological support to deal with stress, which can be both a cause and a consequence of chronic hair loss.
