Cuticle (epidermis)

The cuticle, often referred to as the epidermis, is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, which consists of several layers of flat, overlapping cells. This protective layer plays a crucial role in the health and appearance of the hair by surrounding and protecting the inner part of the hair, the cortex. The cortex is the main part of the hair shaft, which consists of long keratin fibers and is responsible for the strength, color and texture of the hair.

Melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of hair (and skin), is stored in the cortex. There are two types of melanin: eumelanin, which produces dark hair colors such as brown and black, and pheomelanin, which is responsible for reddish and blonde tones. The amount and type of melanin determine the exact color of the hair.

A healthy cuticle reflects light, which gives the hair its shine. Damaged or worn cuticle layers can cause the hair to look dull and rough as it does not reflect light effectively. In addition, a damaged cuticle can allow external pollutants and moisture to penetrate the cortex, leading to further damage such as breakage and split ends.

Dandruff, a common scalp condition, can also affect the health of the cuticle. Although dandruff primarily affects the scalp, an unhealthy scalp environment can lead to damaged and dry hair by disrupting the natural oil production that is important for nourishing the cuticle and hair shaft.

Caring for the cuticle and hair shaft is crucial to maintaining healthy, shiny and strong hair. This includes protecting the hair from excessive heat, chemical treatment and mechanical damage as well as using products aimed at retaining moisture and smoothing the cuticle.
