Dutasteride

Dutasteride is a drug that is primarily used to treat an enlarged prostate in men, but also has relevance in the field of hair health. It belongs to the class of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, a group of drugs that block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone associated with the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia as well as androgenetic alopecia, known as male pattern baldness.

With regard to hair loss, dutasteride works by inhibiting the activity of two types of 5-alpha-reductase, thereby reducing the production of DHT in the body. Since DHT plays a key role in androgenetic alopecia by shrinking hair follicles, reducing DHT can slow the progression of hair loss and in some cases promote or improve hair growth.

Dutasteride is sometimes used off-label for the treatment of hair loss, especially when other treatments such as finasteride, another 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, are not effective. However, it is important to note that dutasteride can have certain side effects and its use in the treatment of hair loss should be carefully coordinated with a doctor.
