Ingrown hairs are hairs that grow into the skin instead of outwards after being cut or removed, which can cause irritation, pain and red bumps. This problem often occurs in areas with thick, curly hair, such as the face, legs, bikini line and underarms. It can be intensified by various hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, sugaring, epilation and the use of depilatory creams, as these methods cut the hair sharply, remove it at the root or irritate the skin, which encourages ingrowth.
The folliculitis that sometimes results is characterized by red, inflamed pustules. Treatment and prevention include gentle skin care, anti-inflammatories and avoiding irritating hair removal methods, as well as preventative measures such as exfoliation, proper shaving technique and wearing loose clothing.
