Electrolytes

Updated on: 05/02/2026

Electrolytes are minerals in the body that carry electrical charges. They are dissolved in body fluids such as blood, sweat and urine and play a crucial role in numerous physiological processes. The most important electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and bicarbonate. These substances help regulate water balance, blood pH, muscle contractions, including heartbeat, and nerve function.

The balance of electrolytes is of central importance for maintaining the health and function of the body. Disturbances in the electrolyte balance, whether due to too high or too low concentrations of one or more electrolytes, can lead to various health problems. Symptoms of imbalance can include fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps, cardiac arrhythmias and confusion.

The body normally regulates electrolyte concentrations very precisely through functions such as kidney filtration and excretion. However, certain conditions and activities, such as prolonged sweating from intense exercise, illnesses that lead to fluid loss (such as diarrhea or vomiting), or an unbalanced diet, can lead to electrolyte imbalances. In such cases, it may be necessary to replace the lost electrolytes through dietary adjustments or the intake of electrolyte replacement supplements to restore health balance.
