Estrogens

Oestrogens are a group of steroidal hormones that are primarily associated with the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and the expression of secondary female sexual characteristics. They play a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and also influence many other bodily functions, including bone growth, skin health and the distribution of body fat. The most important natural oestrogens in the human body are estradiol, estrone and estriol.

Oestrogens have an important function in relation to hair. They can promote hair growth and influence hair density. During the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or when taking estrogen-containing medications such as the contraceptive pill, an increase in estrogen levels can lead to fuller, thicker hair. This is because oestrogens can prolong the anagen phase (active growth phase) of the hair cycle.

However, a drop in oestrogen levels, which typically occurs during the menopause, can lead to hair loss or a reduction in hair density. During the menopause, the ovaries produce less oestrogen, which affects the balance between male and female hormones and often leads to the effects of male hormones, such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), becoming more dominant. DHT can cause the hair follicles to shrink, which accelerates hair loss or leads to thinning hair.

Oestrogens therefore not only play a central role in female reproductive health, but also directly influence hair health and density. A balance of hormone levels is essential for maintaining healthy hair. Hormonal imbalances caused by fluctuations in oestrogen levels can therefore lead to noticeable changes in hair growth and texture.
