Exanthema

Updated on: 05/02/2026

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Exanthema refers to a sudden, often extensive skin rash that can occur as a reaction of the body to various factors, including infections, medications or other triggers. This skin reaction is a visible sign that the organism is reacting to an internal disturbance or threat, which is often related to the immune system. When the immune system becomes aware of an invader such as a virus, bacteria or a substance to which it is sensitive, an inflammatory reaction can occur, which manifests itself in the form of an exanthema, among other things.

Exanthema can occur in a number of diseases, including childhood illnesses such as measles, rubella and chickenpox, but also in reactions to medication or as part of an allergic reaction. The specific appearance of the exanthema, such as its color, shape and distribution on the skin, can give clues to its cause and is therefore an important diagnostic tool for doctors. Treatment of an exanthema depends on the underlying cause and can range from simple avoidance of the trigger to drug therapy to modulate the body’s immune response and relieve symptoms.
