“Follicular unit extraction (abbreviation: FUE) is a modern hair transplant technique. In this procedure, individual hair follicles are taken directly from the scalp and transplanted into bald or thinning areas of the head. In contrast to older methods such as Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), in which a strip of skin with hair follicles is removed from the donor area, the FUE technique allows for minimally invasive harvesting, resulting in less scarring and faster healing.
With the FUE method, the surgeon uses special micro-instruments to remove each hair follicle individually. This process requires no incisions or stitches, resulting in a more natural look and less post-operative pain. Because the follicles are harvested individually, they can be transplanted into the balding areas with great precision, allowing for a natural hairline and hair density.
A major advantage of the FUE technique is that it allows hair to be harvested flexibly from different areas of the head or even the body. This means that patients with limited hair in the traditional donor area at the back of the head can also benefit from a hair transplant. The healing time after an FUE treatment is relatively short compared to other methods, and most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days. The scars are limited to tiny dots that are barely visible after healing, especially with short haircuts.
