Boils

A boil is a painful, purulent infection of the hair follicle and surrounding tissue. It occurs when bacteria, usually staphylococci, invade a hair follicle and cause an infection. This leads to inflammation, which is manifested by redness, swelling and pain.

A boil can develop into an abscess if the infection spreads further and pus accumulates. This can lead to more intense pain, fever and general malaise. Boils often occur in areas where the skin is tighter and friction or pressure is exerted on the hair follicles, such as the neck, under the arms or in the buttocks area.

Treatment for boils may include the application of warm, moist compresses to relieve pain and promote drainage of pus. In some cases, medical treatment may be required to open and drain the abscess or prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection.

It is important not to squeeze or cut open boils yourself, as this can increase the risk of the infection spreading further. In addition, good hygiene practices can help reduce the risk of boils, such as washing the skin regularly, especially after sweating, and avoiding tight-fitting clothing that can cause friction.
