The term “cortex” refers to a specific part of the hair structure. Hair, especially human hair, consists of three main layers: the cuticle (outer layer), the cortex (middle layer) and the medulla (inner layer). The cortex is the most extensive and important part of the hair. It contains the pigments that determine the color of the hair and consists of long keratin fibers that give the hair its strength and elasticity.
The cortex is responsible for the mechanical properties of the hair, such as its strength, elasticity and behavior in the presence of moisture. Damage to the cortex can lead to hair breakage, split ends and a general loss of hair health. Hair care products often aim to protect and strengthen the cortex to keep hair healthy and resilient.
