Hair root

The hair root is an integral part of the hair, located below the surface of the skin, where hair growth takes place. It is embedded in the hair follicle, a small pocket of the epidermis that nourishes and supports the hair. The hair root comprises the lower parts of the hair, including the hair bulb and the hair papilla, which are responsible for the production of new hair cells and thus enable the hair to grow.

The hair bulb, which forms the lowest part of the hair root, contains stem cells that enable continuous renewal and growth of the hair through the production of new cells. These cells divide rapidly and form the hair shaft, which grows out of the follicle. The hair papilla, which is located at the base of the hair bulb, contains blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen, which are essential for hair growth.

The hair root is also the place where melanocytes produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Changes in the activity of melanocytes can lead to changes in hair color, including graying of the hair.

As the hair root is deeply anchored in the dermis, it plays a central role in the health and growth of the hair. Damage to the hair root can lead to hair loss or impaired hair growth. Therefore, caring for the scalp and maintaining a healthy environment for the hair follicles is crucial for promoting strong and healthy hair growth.
