Hypertrichosis

Hypertrichosis refers to abnormal hair growth beyond the normal level on areas of the body that usually have little or no hair. This condition can be either congenital or acquired. The congenital form is extremely rare and often genetic, while the acquired form can be triggered by a number of factors, including medication, certain diseases or as a side effect of therapies. A distinction is also made between localized hair growth, which only affects certain parts of the body, and generalized hair growth, which affects the entire body.

Prevention of acquired hypertrichosis can vary depending on the cause. For example, avoiding or adjusting medications that promote excessive hair growth can help prevent or minimize the condition. For underlying health conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, appropriate treatment of the underlying problem can also prevent hypertrichosis or slow its progression. However, there are no known prevention methods for the congenital form of hypertrichosis as it is genetic.

There are various methods available to treat hypertrichosis that aim to reduce or remove hair growth. These include temporary methods such as shaving, waxing or the use of chemical depilatories as well as more permanent solutions such as laser hair removal or electrolysis. These methods can vary in effectiveness depending on the severity of the hypertrichosis and the area of the body affected. It is important that sufferers consult a dermatologist to develop a suitable treatment strategy. In addition, in some cases, treating the underlying cause of hypertrichosis (e.g. hormonal therapies for endocrine disorders) may help to improve the condition. Despite the treatment options available, hypertrichosis can be a significant psychological burden for those affected, which is why psychological support can play an important role alongside medical support.
