A keratin treatment is a chemical procedure that is often carried out in hairdressing salons to smooth the hair and reduce frizz (frizziness). It is sometimes also referred to as Brazilian keratin treatment or keratin smoothing treatment. The process involves applying a keratin solution to the hair, which is then sealed with heat (usually with a straightening iron). Keratin is a protein that occurs naturally in hair, nails and skin, and it plays a central role in the structure and protection of these tissues.
The main aims of a keratin treatment include smoothing the hair structure by filling the hair with keratin, filling porous areas in the hair shaft and achieving a smoother overall appearance. Furthermore, sealing the hair with keratin reduces frizz, smoothes the surface and makes the hair less prone to frizz in a damp environment. The shine of the hair is also increased, as straight hair reflects light better, and the manageability of the hair is improved, as treated hair is often easier to comb, style and keep in shape.
The effects of a keratin treatment can last for several weeks to months, depending on the hair structure, the duration of the treatment and subsequent hair care. It is important to note that keratin treatments may contain chemicals that can cause allergies or skin irritation in some people. It is therefore advisable to carry out an allergy test or obtain detailed information before undergoing treatment.
