Micrografts are tiny hair transplants, each consisting of 1-2 hair follicles. This method is used in hair transplantation to achieve particularly natural and aesthetically pleasing results. Unlike other transplantation techniques that use larger units of hair follicles such as minigrafts or slit grafts, micrografts rely on smaller, more precise units.
Micrografts typically consist of individual hair follicles or a follicular unit, which makes them particularly suitable for restoring a natural hairline. A follicular unit is the natural grouping of 1-4 hair follicles from which hair grows on the scalp. By using micrografts, a higher hair density can be achieved as the small units can be placed close together.
Two important techniques that are often used with micrografts are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). In the FUE technique, individual hair follicles are removed from the donor area and transplanted into the recipient area as micrografts. This method is known for its minimal scarring and the natural alignment of the hair. In the FUT technique, also known as the strip method, a strip of skin is removed from the donor area, from which the micrografts are then prepared.
The donor area, usually the back of the head or the sides of the scalp, provides the hair follicles for the micrografts. These follicles are then transplanted into the recipient area, i.e. the balding or thinning areas. Precise placement of the micrografts can restore a natural hairline and increase hair density.
After a micrograft transplant, post-operative care is crucial for the success of the hair transplant. This includes measures such as avoiding direct sunlight and following special instructions for hair care and washing.
