The Nd:YAG laser, an advanced solid-state laser, is used in numerous medical and aesthetic applications, especially in hair removal. This laser uses a neodymium crystal as the active medium within a yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal to generate light with a specific wavelength of 1064 nm. This longer wavelength is particularly beneficial as it allows the laser to safely and effectively reach deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser is often recommended for people with darker skin types as it offers a lower risk of pigmentation changes and burns.
The laser works by targeting the melanin in the hair follicles, absorbing the heat energy and thereby destroying the follicles, which permanently reduces hair growth. This targeted technique makes the Nd:YAG laser an effective method for long-term hair removal goals. In addition to its role in hair removal, the Nd:YAG laser is also used to treat skin pigmentation, vascular lesions and, in some cases, tattoo removal.
