Papillae are small, wart-like protrusions that can be found on the surface of tissue or organs throughout the body. Their functions and structures vary depending on their location. Taste papillae on the tongue, for example, are responsible for the perception of taste, as they contain taste buds that convert chemical stimuli into nerve signals. In the skin, dermal papillae provide a stronger connection between the skin layers and contribute to the formation of the fingerprint pattern.
There are papillae on the hair follicles, which are rich in blood vessels and supply the hair with nutrients for its growth. The papilla nervi optici, the point at which the optic nerve leaves the eye, is another example and can provide information about various diseases during eye examinations. Papillae increase the surface area for the exchange of substances and often contain specialized cells that are essential for the respective organ functions.
