Photothermolysis

Photothermolysis is a principle used in dermatologic and aesthetic medicine to treat various skin problems, including hair removal. It is based on the application of light energy, typically through laser hair removal or intense pulsed light sources(IPL), which targets specific chromophores in the skin, such as melanin in the hair follicles.

The principle of photothermolysis uses the absorption of light energy by melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin and hair their color. When the light energy is directed at the skin, the melanin in the hair follicle absorbs this energy and converts it into heat. This heat development leads to the destruction of the hair follicle structure, which slows down or permanently prevents hair growth. The effectiveness of this method depends on the concentration of melanin in the hair, which is why the treatment is generally more successful with darker hair on light skin.

The use of photothermolysis is not limited to hair removal. It is also used to treat skin changes such as pigmentation spots, small blood vessels, age spots and for skin rejuvenation. The targeted application makes it possible to leave the surrounding tissue undamaged while effectively treating the desired target tissue.

A key factor for the success of the treatment is taking into account the growth phases of the hair, as photothermolysis is most effective when the hair is in the anagen phase (active growth phase). Since not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, several treatment sessions are usually required to achieve long-term hair reduction.

In summary, photothermolysis is an advanced technique that enables selective destruction of target structures such as hair follicles through the precise application of light energy, making it a popular method for permanent hair removal and other dermatological treatments.
