Pores

Pores are small openings on the surface of the skin that fulfill a variety of important functions. They serve as exit points for hair follicles and are also the openings of the sebaceous glands, which produce a natural oil to keep skin and hair supple. Sweat is also secreted through these pores, which cools the body and contributes to the elimination of metabolic products.

Although the term “pores” is mainly used in connection with the skin, it is also relevant in other biological contexts. For example, the lungs have alveoli, small sac-like structures that are sometimes referred to in a broader sense as “pores” of the lungs. These alveoli play a central role in the gas exchange process, transferring oxygen from inhaled air into the blood and releasing carbon dioxide from the blood for exhalation. Although alveoli and skin pores are clearly different in their function and structure, they share the basic principle of serving as an interface for the exchange between the inside of the body and the environment.

The size and appearance of skin pores can be influenced by various factors, including genetic predisposition, skin type, age and environmental conditions. Excessive production of sebum can lead to clogged pores, which in turn promote skin blemishes such as acne and blackheads. A regular and thorough skin care routine is essential to keep pores clean and skin healthy.
