Pseudofolliculitis, often known as pseudofolliculitis barbae, is a condition that often develops after hair removal, especially after shaving. This condition is characterized by small, inflamed bumps on the skin that appear when the hair curls and grows back into the skin. Symptoms of pseudofolliculitis include inflamed bumps that may be itchy or painful, similar to acne or small pimples, ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation and possibly scarring in severe or recurrent cases.
This condition is more common in people with curly or wavy hair, but can affect anyone who removes hair. To prevent and treat pseudofolliculitis, switching to gentler hair removal methods, proper shaving technique, regular exfoliation of the skin and the use of moisturizing and anti-inflammatory products can be helpful. Consultation with a dermatologist is advisable for severe cases.
