Pseudomonilethrix is a rare, genetic hair disease characterized by a characteristic bead-like or bulging structure of the hair. This irregular texture of the hair makes it particularly brittle and prone to split ends. The affected hair alternates between thicker and thinner patches, giving it the typical pearl-like appearance. These changes mainly affect the hair follicles, which are responsible for hair growth.
The diagnosis of Pseudomonilethrix is usually made by trichoscopy, a microscopic examination of the hair. Under the microscope, the irregular structure of the hair becomes visible, which is an important basis for the diagnosis. The hair follicles from which the hair grows are genetically modified in such a way that they produce the pearl-like structure. Although the disease is usually hereditary and can run in families, in rare cases it can also occur without a family history.
There is no definitive cure for Pseudomonilethrix. However, special hair care products and treatments can help to strengthen the hair structure and minimize breakage. Recommended measures include gentle hair care products that do not cause additional damage to the hair and regular, gentle haircuts to prevent split ends. Moisturizing hair masks and oils can also help to soften the hair and reduce its susceptibility to breakage.
In contrast to Monilethrix, a similar hair disease that also causes a bead-like structure of the hair, Pseudomonilethrix usually has a less pronounced form of hair abnormality. With Monilethrix, the changes are often more pronounced and can lead to more severe hair problems. Both diseases affect the hair follicles, but the genetic causes and the extent of the symptoms differ.
