Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation and scaly patches of skin, particularly in areas with a high density of sebaceous glands. These areas include the scalp, the face (especially the nasal folds, eyebrows and beard areas), the ears and the chest area. This skin condition often leads to visible dandruff on the scalp, which becomes a major complaint for many sufferers.
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not yet fully understood, but a combination of genetic, environmental and biological factors play a role. One major factor appears to be an overreaction to a yeast of the genus Malassezia, which occurs naturally on human skin. In people with seborrhoeic dermatitis, this fungus can trigger an inflammatory reaction that leads to the typical symptoms of the disease.
The symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis include not only the aforementioned dandruff and oily skin, but also redness, itching and a burning sensation in the affected areas. The disease can be episodic, with periods of improvement and worsening, often influenced by stress, weather changes and other external factors.
Good hair and scalp care is important for people with seborrhoeic dermatitis as it can help to control symptoms and improve overall wellbeing.
