Receding hairline

The term “receding hairline” describes the typical bald patches on the temples of the head that occur mainly in men. This form of hair loss usually begins at the temples and gradually spreads backwards, creating the characteristic receding hairlines.

The term comes from German and has its origins in historical times when high officials and advisors, who often bore the title “Geheimrat” (privy councillor), tended to show such hair loss at an advanced age. As these men were often considered wise and experienced, the term was popularly used with a certain reverence and respect.

Today, the term is used humorously or colloquially to describe the typical male pattern hair loss that often comes with age. A receding hairline is a natural part of the ageing process and is influenced by genetic and hormonal factors.
