Shock-Loss

Shock loss is a term used in connection with hair loss and describes sudden, temporary hair loss triggered by stress, trauma or medical interventions. This hair loss often occurs in the weeks or months following the event and can occur in both men and women.

Shock loss occurs when hair follicles enter a premature telogen phase (resting phase), causing them to fall out. This mechanism can be activated by various triggers, such as surgical procedures, physical or psychological stress and certain medications. Shock loss is particularly common after hair transplants when the transplanted hair follicles and surrounding tissue are exposed to stress. Serious injuries, operations, illnesses or intense emotional stress such as grief or fear can also lead to shock loss. In addition, certain medications or treatments, such as chemotherapy, can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Shock loss is usually temporary. Hair normally grows back within six to twelve months once the cause of the stress has been eliminated and the hair growth cycle has normalized. Preventative measures and appropriate aftercare can reduce the risk of shock loss. These include gentle treatment after hair transplants and stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga or therapy. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can also strengthen the hair follicles and limit hair loss.

In most cases, hair will grow back after a few months, but if hair loss is persistent or severe, a dermatologist or hair specialist should be consulted to ensure appropriate treatment and to rule out possible underlying causes.
