Testosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a central role in the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics. It belongs to the androgens, a group of hormones that are often referred to as male sex hormones, although they are found in both men and women. In men, testosterone is mainly produced in the testicles and to a lesser extent in the adrenal glands, while in women the ovaries and also the adrenal glands secrete testosterone, albeit in much lower concentrations.

Testosterone has a variety of functions in the body. In men, it promotes the development of primary sexual characteristics (such as testes and penis) and secondary sexual characteristics (such as voice deepening, beard growth and changes in body hair). It also plays a crucial role in the production of sperm, libido (sexual desire) and the regulation of fat distribution as well as muscle mass and strength. In women, testosterone also influences libido and plays a role in bone health.

Testosterone levels are subject to natural fluctuations and can be influenced by various factors, including age, time of day (with peak levels in the morning) and lifestyle. Abnormally low or high testosterone levels can cause various health problems, such as infertility, bone weakness, muscle loss, but also mood swings and loss of energy.
