Trichoptilosis, popularly known as split ends, refers to the splitting of the ends of the hair into two or more strands. It is a form of hair damage that is usually caused by a combination of factors, including excessive heat (e.g. from blow dryers or straighteners), chemical treatments (such as coloring or bleaching) and physical stress (such as intense brushing). These factors cause the hair fibers to lose moisture, natural oils and proteins, which weakens the cuticle (outer layer) and makes the ends of the hair prone to breakage and split ends.
The best way to treat trichoptilosis is to remove the split ends by regular trimming. In addition, the use of moisturizing care products can help to improve the condition of the hair and reduce the risk of split ends. It is also advisable to minimize the use of hot styling tools and use heat protectants if necessary.
