Trichorrhexis nodosa is a hair disorder characterized by brittleness and weakness of the hair, especially in areas where there are knot-like thickenings on the hair shaft. These knots cause the hair to break easily at these points. The disease can affect the hair on the head as well as hair on other parts of the body.
The causes of trichorrhexis nodosa can be varied and include both genetic predispositions and external factors. External causes can include mechanical stress from heavy brushing or styling, chemical damage from coloring, perming or excessive heat exposure (e.g. from hair dryers or straighteners). In some cases, the condition may also indicate an underlying health disorder or malnutrition, particularly a lack of vitamins and minerals that are important for healthy hair growth.
Treatment for trichorrhexis nodosa aims to identify and address the underlying causes. This may include changing hair care habits, avoiding chemical treatments and heat, improving diet or treating underlying health problems. In some cases, specialized hair care or consultation with a dermatologist or trichologist may be recommended to restore hair health and prevent further hair damage.
