Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is a rare, genetic disorder characterized by brittle, fragile hair due to low levels of sulphur in the hair proteins. It is a multisystemic disorder that can affect other organs as well as the hair. People with TTD often have thin, brittle hair that breaks off easily and has visible defects in the hair structure under the microscope.
The condition can also include other symptoms such as developmental delays, skin changes, eye problems and increased sensitivity to light. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the normal repair and function of cells. Treatment approaches are usually aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life, as there is no specific cure for TTD.
