Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to pull out one’s own hair. Individuals with trichotillomania often pull hair from their scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes or other areas of the body, which can lead to noticeable hair loss and bald patches. This behavior often occurs in response to stress, anxiety, depression or boredom and serves as a form of self-soothing or emotional relief.

The exact causes of trichotillomania are not yet fully understood, but it is thought that a combination of genetic, biological and environmental factors play a role. The disorder can begin at any age, but is most common in preadolescence or early adolescence.

Treatment for trichotillomania can be challenging and usually involves behavioral therapy, particularly techniques to increase self-awareness and develop strategies to deal with the urge to pull out hair. In some cases, medication, particularly those used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, can also be helpful.

Trichotillomania can be very stressful for those affected and can lead to shame, social isolation and reduced self-esteem. It is therefore important to offer understanding and support and to seek professional help to deal with this disorder.
