Vitamin E is a group of eight fat-soluble compounds that play an important role in human nutrition. These compounds include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, with alpha-tocopherol being the best known and most abundant form in the human body. Vitamin E is best known for its antioxidant properties. It helps to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals that can occur during normal metabolic processes or from external influences such as pollution and UV light. This antioxidant effect helps to prevent chronic diseases and delay the ageing process.
Vitamin E also plays an important role in maintaining the immune system, especially in older people, and supports skin health by helping to heal wounds and reduce scarring. It is also important for visual function, blood clotting and cell renewal.
As far as hair growth is concerned, vitamin E may also have a positive influence here. Its antioxidant properties can help reduce oxidative stress reactions on the scalp that can lead to hair loss. A healthy scalp is crucial for strong hair growth, and improving blood circulation in this area – another effect of vitamin E – can strengthen hair follicles and thus promote hair growth. Some studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that topical application of vitamin E or taking supplements can support hair growth and make hair look healthier, but more research is needed to clearly demonstrate these effects.
